Bergen - the Fjord Metro
In recent years, there have been several initiatives related to city boats in Bergen. The harbor areas in central Bergen are undergoing significant changes. For instance, the Dokken area is being converted into residential and urban purposes as the container port is relocated to Ågotnes. Furthermore, the Puddefjorden area is undergoing extensive urban transformation on both sides. This reduces available space for port facilities in downtown Bergen while also limiting cruise activity.
Kildn Zero Emission Port is located southwest on Askøy, along the main route into Bergen. Kildn aims to become the world's first zero-emission port for international, national, and local passenger traffic, serving as a home port for international passenger ships, regional fjord transport routes, and fjord tourism in the Vestlandet region.
Kildn seeks to strengthen Bergen and the region's maritime position, create a platform for research and development, promote tourism, and generate new jobs both on Askøy and throughout the region. Kildn will serve a combination of local commuters through a regional fjord transport network and national/international tourists either visiting Vestlandet or starting/ending their journeys with larger passenger vessels.
Kildn plays a vital role in developing a regional maritime transport system. This involves improving schedules and establishing the base infrastructure for passenger boat traffic. The target audience is divided into two main categories:
Commuters:
Those who can benefit from the boat service in their daily lives, whether it's for work commutes, leisure trips, shopping excursions, school transport, or visits.
Tourists:
Travelers who use the boat service sporadically, such as cruise tourists, backpackers, motorists, air travelers, cyclists, or train passengers.
To make the fjord metro system effective, it's crucial to establish a robust service from the outset. This includes frequent departures and a connected network of routes. The full benefits of the fjord metro will only be realized when multiple routes are integrated, similar to larger cities with metro systems where the utility is maximized when various lines are interconnected.
In the long run, the fjord metro can not only offer a completely new public transportation option to growth areas but also to smaller communities along the fjords. This can breathe new life into previously thriving coastal communities and help reduce the need for car traffic and road expansions. This requires a visionary approach and a long-term perspective.
- The Kildn project aims to establish a fjord metro system that serves coastal communities in Vestland by utilizing the sea and fjords as a crucial transportation route, reducing reliance on the road network. Such a metro system requires various boat concepts, and water buses become an essential component in the machinery to connect smaller locations to the main routes, both in central areas and remote regions.
