Fredrikstad Municipality owns and operates the city ferries - BYFERGEN. The city of Fredrikstad has the longest history of running a city ferry fleet in Norway. It is dated back to 1870s and today there are . Riding the ferries is free of charge. Bringing your bicycle on board is also free. You are allowed to bring your dog on the ferry as well.

The red and white ferries have become a kind of signature for the city. With their tireless journey up and down the river, they redeem the city. The journey from Gamlebyen to Cicignon takes only 59 seconds. One of the world's shortest river cruises, but just long enough to evoke the good feeling of living in a city that takes people where they want in a particularly pleasant way. The ferry rides are a city bonus!

First Electric Ferry in operation already in 2019

Fredrikstad was among the very first to order electric ferry and their first was in operation already 2019. Now they have four electric ferries in operation 24/7 all year around. ZEM Energy AS has delivered the battery- and driveline systems onboard with the following spec:

• 100/133 kWh ESS and 150 kW propulsion motor.
• 100 kW Induction charging.

Preparing for the future

Fredrikstad collaborate with HYKE exploring the use of their newly designed water shuttle. An electric shuttle highly automated and prepared for autonomous operation. The new water shuttle will in the test operation cross between Øra and Kråkerøy included in the ordinary operation of BYFERGEN, cutting the traveltime with 90% going from one part of the city to the other.

Living Lab

The Fredrikstad Living Lab aims to integrate New and Shared Mobility (NSM) and multimodal travel with city ferries, build a mobility hub infrastructure and share knowledge on how to shift car traffic to waterways.
