Project background
Sundbåten - the city ferry in Kristiansund - how to make it electric and autonomous?
Sundbåten in Kristiansund is the world's oldest public transport route in continuous operation, since 1876. The ferry transports people between the four islands in Kristiansund.
- Since 1876, Sundbåten has transported 133 million passengers in Kristiansund's harbor. For nearly 147 years, we have connected the city, people, and businesses on the "blue road." We have yet to spend a single investment krone on our gateway. The "blue road" represents for us a sustainable gateway since 1876, with significant opportunities for development and growth in the future without intruding into the urban and natural areas of a densely populated city/municipality. The "blue road" represents the solution to future transportation needs that need to be met, and we will build the future of transportation through mobility in collaboration with other stakeholders. We will never look back. The offering will be expanded in the years to come.
Arild Dybå-Eidem, Managing Director of Sundbåten
Maritime Robotics led a consortium of industrial and research partners in a Pilot-T project contributing to how this route can use technology towards autonomous operation. The project partners include Maritime Robotics, Møre Maritime, Ulstein International, Elmarin, aPoint, and research partners from the University of South-Eastern Norway and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology,. The consortium collaborated closely with the Kristiansund Kommunale Sundbåtvesen, the municipality, and Norwegian maritime authorities to achieve new results related to design and specification, electrical and autonomy technology, risk analysis, verification and certification. Through the project we gained in-depth knowledge about user needs, operational concepts, business model, risk management and technical possibilities.
